Steven Mateo is a mixed media artist working in graphite, charcoal, and pastel. His work explores the contrast between darkness and emergence, using light and color as moments of transformation.

15-year hiatus from art.

After 15 years away from art, Mateo returned with a singular focus: mastering the fundamentals.

His early works were dedicated to understanding value, light, shadow, and texture through graphite and charcoal. In a short few months he accumulated over a 1000 hours on his art.

This technical foundation became the basis for his transition into color, marking a shift not just in medium, but in meaning.

His current body of work explores emergence.

The idea of growth through the darkness. Through high-contrast compositions and controlled use of color, his artwork reflects tension, transformation, and clarity.

Mateo is currently developing a growing body of work as he transitions into larger-scale pieces and gallery-focused collections.
